A Retired Chinese Couples RV Nomadic Life

Inside the RV, the fridge is stocked with fresh vegetables and meat, a rice cooker is steaming, the air conditioning keeps the temperature comfortable, and their phones and tablets are charging - everything runs as smoothly as at home.

This retired couple from Chengdu has been on the road for four full months. Starting from Sichuan, they travelled through Gansu to Xinjiang, then turned into Qinghai - covering over 10,000 kilometres. And the key to their worry-free journey has been a brand-new RV power system built with Wysher batteries and Victron Energy storage solutions.

Lao Zhang is 62, a retired physics teacher from a Chengdu high school. He and his wife had long dreamed of buying an RV after retirement and travelling across China. In the spring of 2023, that dream came true - they used most of their life savings to purchase a C-class RV on an Iveco chassis.

The vehicle was great - spacious, comfortable to drive. But they soon discovered one problem: there was never enough electricity.

"Our RV came with a 12V system and a 200Ah lead-acid battery bank," says Lao Zhang. "The manufacturer called it 'worry-free camping' - but in reality, it was anything but."

Lao Zhang did the math: 12V × 200Ah = 2.4kWh. That tiny capacity was only enough to run the fridge for a day and a night, boil two kettles of water, fully charge phones and tablets, and watch a couple of hours of TV. If they used the induction cooktop - even just to boil noodles - the charge would plummet.

"Every night, we'd have to do the same thing - turn on the phone's flashlight, crawl under the seat, and check the battery indicator," recalls Wang Fang. "The indicator had only three lights: green, yellow, red. Every time the yellow light came on, my heart would skip a beat."

Even more stressful was the limited charging while parked. After leaving a campsite, the only way to recharge was through the alternator while driving. But the 12V system had poor charging efficiency - five or six hours of driving would only bring the batteries to 70-80%. They had installed 400W of solar panels, but again, the 12V system's charging efficiency was low - on a good day, they could harvest barely 0.5kWh.

"Once we were parked at Tagong Grassland in western Sichuan," Lao Zhang recalls. "The scenery was stunning - we really wanted to stay an extra couple of days. But our RV only had enough power for a day and a half. By the second afternoon, the battery indicator had dropped into the red zone. We had no choice but to pack up and drive down the mountain. That evening the sunset was gorgeous, but we couldn't stay - because we had no electricity."

"From that moment on, I kept thinking - why can't we, just like at home, comfortably stay wherever we like, for as long as we like?" says Lao Zhang.

Lao Zhang started researching solutions on RV forums. He noticed a growing trend: more and more seasoned RV travellers were switching from 12V to 48V systems. The advantages of 48V were obvious - for the same power load, the current is only one-quarter of 12V, meaning thinner cables, less heat, and lower energy losses. More importantly, 48V supports high-current charge and discharge, easily powering high-wattage appliances like induction cooktops and air conditioners.

"48V is the future," says Lao Zhang. "Especially for retirees like us who plan to live on the road long-term - the power system has to be rock-solid."

Next came the equipment selection. Lao Zhang saw fellow RVers recommending a combination of Victron Energy devices paired with LiFePO₄ batteries. He spent two full weeks researching, and finally settled on two brands: Wysher and Victron.

"Wysher's 48V 150Ah LiFePO₄ batteries are rack-mountable and very easy to install. Most importantly, they support CAN-bus communication and integrate seamlessly with Victron's Cerbo GX controller - which means I get complete system monitoring. And Wysher's batteries are modular - I could start with three units and expand later if needed."

"As for Victron - its equipment has an excellent reputation in the RV community, especially the PowerAssist feature on the MultiPlus inverter. We seniors sometimes stay at campsites with limited facilities, where outlets only provide 10A or 15A - PowerAssist automatically supplements from the battery, so we never have to worry about tripping breakers."

After nearly three months of planning and preparation - taking into account the RV's space constraints, payload capacity, and the couple's daily electricity needs - Lao Zhang finalised a "simple, reliable, and generously sized" system:

"After the installation, life became completely different."

The conversion was carried out at a professional RV workshop in Chengdu, taking five full days. The biggest challenge was fitting all the equipment into the limited space.

Three Wysher 48V 150Ah batteries were installed in the original battery compartment - which had previously held two 12V lead-acid batteries, bulky and heavy. Replacing them with three Wysher lithium units increased storage from 2.4kWh to 21.6kWh in the same footprint - a nine-fold increase. And the lithium batteries weighed nearly half as much as the lead-acid ones.

"The installer said the design was excellent," says Lao Zhang. "We didn't need to modify the original battery compartment at all - they just slid right in. Wysher batteries are standard size, and three fit perfectly side by side."

The Victron MultiPlus 48/3000 was mounted in a cabinet under the dinette seat - a space that was otherwise unused. The heat generated during operation dissipates naturally through ventilation holes in the cabinet door, without requiring additional fans.

The SmartSolar MPPT 150/35 charge controller was installed next to the inverter, managing the 800W of flexible solar panels on the roof. With over 99% conversion efficiency, it extracts as much energy as possible from the PV array even on cloudy days.

The Cerbo GX controller and GX Touch 50 screen are Lao Zhang's favourite parts of the entire system. The Cerbo GX is installed inside the equipment cabinet, connected via CAN-bus to the Wysher batteries' BMS; the GX Touch 50 touchscreen is mounted on the control panel just above the RV entrance - a handy position that greets them as soon as they step in.

The Victron Orion-Tr 48/12-30A DC-DC converter steps down power from the main 48V bank to 12V for the RV's existing loads - lights, water pump, exhaust fans, etc. This means all original 12V appliances required no modification; old equipment continues to work, while the new system provides stable power - best of both worlds.

The system went live in May 2024, just in time for Lao Zhang and his wife's planned "Grand Western Loop" - starting from Chengdu, through western Sichuan into Gansu, then west to Xinjiang, and back via Qinghai - a four-month, 15,000-kilometre journey.

Within the first month on the road, Lao Zhang experienced the dramatic improvements brought by the 48V system.

First, capacity. The three Wysher batteries delivered 21.6kWh - nine times the old lead-acid bank. Their daily usage included: the fridge running 24/7, cooking two meals a day on the induction cooktop, watching TV or tablets for three or four hours each evening, charging phones and tablets anytime, and occasional use of a hairdryer and kettle - all together, about 2-3kWh per day.

"21.6kWh gives us a full week," says Lao Zhang. "Even if we had a whole week of overcast skies and the solar panels produced nothing, we could still live normally. That was absolutely unthinkable before."

Second, solar efficiency. With 800W of solar panels paired with the 48V system, under the intense Qinghai-Tibet Plateau sunlight, a sunny day yields nearly 4kWh. That means on good weather days, the couple's daily consumption is effectively replenished by solar power the same day.

"We stayed five consecutive days by Qinghai Lake without moving the vehicle, without starting the generator, and without any shore power," says Lao Zhang. "Solar alone covered everything. And you know what? That feeling of not having to worry about electricity - that's what true RV living is all about."

What touched Lao Zhang most was the automatic switching feature. At a campsite in Xinjiang, the charging outlet was only rated for 10A - barely enough for a low-power charger. After plugging in, the MultiPlus instantly detected the limited shore power and automatically supplemented from the battery to run the induction cooktop and air conditioner. The whole process was fully automatic with no manual adjustments - the cooktop worked normally in the kitchen, cool air flowed from the AC in the living area, and Lao Zhang and Wang Fang sat outside enjoying tea and the scenery.

"Before, when we used that 10A outlet, turning on one extra appliance would trip the breaker, and we'd have to run to the campground manager to reset it," Lao Zhang laughs. "Now we don't even think about it - the system handles everything."

The four-month grand loop is nearing its end. Lao Zhang and Wang Fang have driven 15,000 kilometres, passing snowy mountains in western Sichuan, the Gobi in Gansu, the grasslands of Xinjiang, and the lakes of Qinghai. But this time, they never had to leave any place early because of "running out of power."

"We went back to Tagong Grassland specially," says Wang Fang. "This time we stayed a full five days. Every morning we watched the sunrise lighting up Yala Snow Mountain, and in the afternoons we strolled across the grassland and chatted with the locals. At night, there was still enough power for TV and hot water to soak our feet - this is exactly the scene I imagined before retirement."

"I took over three thousand photos," says Lao Zhang. "Before, I missed so many beautiful spots because I was afraid to stop. This time it was different - whenever we saw a place we liked, we stopped, and we stayed as long as we wanted. This is the retirement life I wanted."

From an ordinary RV where every watt had to be counted, to a mobile home that can stop anywhere and stay as long as you wish - Lao Zhang and Wang Fang's story is inspiring more and more retired couples and RV nomads across China to follow their example.
