The Orion-Tr non-isolated range exists for a straightforward purpose: to take a 24V DC source and deliver a stable, regulated 12V output to equipment that was never designed to run on 24V. It is not a battery charger. It has no charge algorithm, no absorption phase, and no float mode. It is a voltage converter in the purest sense - an electronic building block that isolates connected loads from the voltage fluctuations of the source battery.
What “Non-Isolated” Means, and When It Is the Right Choice
In a non-isolated DC-DC converter, the input negative and the output negative are internally connected. There is a single common negative return shared between the 24V source and the 12V load circuit. For the vast majority of vehicle, boat, and industrial installations, this is exactly what the system already has - a common chassis or bus-bar ground that bonds everything together.
The practical consequence is significant: a non-isolated converter is smaller, lighter, and more efficient than its isolated counterpart. There is no transformer, no galvanic barrier, and no second set of isolation circuitry. The Orion-Tr 24/12-5, for example, weighs just 0.09 kg and measures 53 × 51 × 27 mm. The 24/12-10 is 0.2 kg and 73 × 94 × 37 mm. Both fit into spaces where an isolated converter would not.
The non-isolated Orion-Tr is the correct choice when the 24V source and the 12V load circuit already share a common negative - which is the norm on steel-hulled vessels, most vehicles, and industrial DC systems where a single ground reference is used throughout.
Full Load Efficiency Above 95%
The Orion-Tr range uses synchronous rectification rather than conventional diode-based rectification. The practical result is full-load efficiency exceeding 95% on the 24/12-5 and 97% on the 24/12-10. That efficiency figure is not a laboratory curiosity. It means the converter generates very little waste heat during continuous operation - a critical consideration in the confined spaces where these units are typically installed. A marine electronics locker, a vehicle electrical cabinet, or an equipment bay behind a panel does not offer generous ventilation. A converter that runs cool does not need it.
Wide Input Range, Stable Output
The 24/12 models accept an input voltage range of 18–35V DC. This is deliberately wider than the nominal 24V battery voltage, because a working 24V bus is rarely a steady 24V. When a starter motor engages, a bow thruster pulls current, or a winch motor starts, the bus voltage can sag well below nominal. When a high-output alternator is charging, it can rise above 28V. The Orion-Tr maintains a regulated 12V output throughout these surges and sags.
Output voltage is 12.7V for the 24/12-5 and 12.5V for the 24/12-10. Both hold that voltage from no load to full load, so connected equipment never sees the disturbance on the source side. Continuous output current is 5A and 10A respectively, with short-term peak capability of 7A and 12A. Off-load current draw is less than 20 mA for the 5A model and less than 45 mA for the 10A model - negligible drain on the source battery when the converter is idle.
Screw Terminals and IP43 Protection
The Orion-Tr uses screw terminals for input and output connections, rated for cable cross-sections up to 3.3 mm² (AWG12) on the 24/12-5 and 6 mm² (AWG10) on the 24/12-10. No special tools or crimping equipment are required. The IP43 rating applies when the unit is mounted with the screw terminals oriented downwards, protecting against dust and water spray at up to 60° from vertical. This is sufficient for engine bays, equipment lockers, and marine electrical compartments where incidental moisture is possible but immersion is not.
Where the 24/12 Non-Isolated Orion-Tr Fits
The 24/12 converter is a common building block in systems that run a 24V house bank or vehicle electrical system but still have 12V equipment to power. The 5A and 10A models cover modest loads - navigation instruments, communication radios, LED lighting circuits, device charging outlets, small pumps, and control electronics. The larger 24/12-15 and 24/12-20 models in the same range extend coverage to heavier 12V loads where required.
Typical installations include:
Boats with 24V house systems and 12V navigation electronics. A 24/12-10 converter supplies stable 12V power to a chartplotter, VHF radio, AIS transponder, and instrument displays without requiring a separate 12V battery or a voltage-dropping resistor that wastes energy as heat.
Trucks and commercial vehicles with 24V chassis systems and 12V auxiliary equipment. The converter powers communications radios, dash cameras, tool chargers, or cab electronics from the 24V alternator and battery system.
RVs and campervans that have moved to a 24V house bank for inverter efficiency but still need 12V for lighting, fans, refrigerators, and USB outlets. The Orion-Tr provides the 12V rail without adding a second battery.
Industrial control panels and machinery where a 24V DC bus must supply 12V sensors, indicators, or relays. The compact footprint and screw terminals make panel mounting straightforward.
The Broader Orion-Tr Non-Isolated Range
Beyond the 24/12 models, the non-isolated Orion-Tr range covers other voltage combinations for systems where step-up or step-down conversion is required between different nominal voltages. These include 12/24 models that step a 12V source up to 24V, and 48/12 models that step a 48V source down to 12V. All share the same design philosophy: synchronous rectification, screw terminals, IP43 protection when mounted terminals-down, and a compact enclosure.
