Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC Charger Isolated - Adaptive Charging for Dual Battery Systems with Separate Ground References,OR1121222120

About this product

The Orion-Tr Smart isolated is not a voltage converter with a charger label attached. It is an adaptive three-stage DC-DC battery charger - bulk, absorption, float - designed for dual battery systems where a starter battery and its alternator are used to charge a service battery, and where the two battery circuits must not share a common negative connection.
That last condition is what separates this product from the non-isolated Orion-Tr range. In a non-isolated charger, input and output share a single negative return. In the isolated Orion-Tr Smart, the input and output have separate, galvanically isolated negative connections - 200V DC of isolation between input, output, and case. The two battery systems never touch.

Why Isolation Matters in Real Installations

Most vehicle installations have a common chassis ground. The starter battery negative and the service battery negative are both bonded to the same metal structure. In that situation, a non-isolated charger works fine and costs less. But there are installations where a common ground either does not exist or should not be created.
Fibreglass boats are the classic example. A fibreglass hull has no chassis. Battery banks may be grounded to separate bus bars, or to nothing at all. Running a non-isolated charger between them creates a negative path that did not previously exist - a path that can carry stray currents, accelerate galvanic corrosion on underwater hardware, and introduce noise into sensitive electronics.
Trailers present a related problem. The ground path through a 7-pin connector is thin, subject to corrosion, and unreliable at the best of times. An isolated charger makes the charging circuit independent of that questionable ground path.
The isolated version is also the safer default when the installer is uncertain about the grounding topology. An isolated unit can be wired as non-isolated by simply connecting the two negatives together. The reverse is not possible. For anyone building a system they may later expand or reconfigure, the isolated model preserves that flexibility.

Built-In Bluetooth - Monitoring and Configuration Without Opening the Enclosure

The “Smart” in the product name comes from the integrated Bluetooth connection. Using the VictronConnect app on a smartphone or tablet, the charger can be monitored and configured without any physical access to the unit. For an installer who has tucked the charger behind a panel in a vehicle or boat, this is not a convenience. It is the difference between a five-minute settings adjustment and an hour of disassembly.
Through the app, every charging parameter is accessible: battery preset selection, absorption voltage, float voltage, bulk time limit, re-bulk voltage offset, and adaptive absorption time. The charger ships with eight pre-programmed battery settings covering lithium, AGM, gel, and flooded lead-acid, but nothing is locked. For lithium batteries, a fixed charging time of two hours is preset to ensure a full charge; for lead-acid, the adaptive algorithm shortens absorption time after shallow discharges to avoid overcharging and extends it after deep discharges to ensure full recharge.
The app also provides real-time status and historical data. If the charger is not behaving as expected, the VictronConnect diagnostics can show exactly what the unit is doing - input voltage, output current, charger state, and any active protection conditions.

Engine Running Detection - No Ignition Wire, No D+ Signal

The Orion-Tr Smart includes an engine shutdown detection mechanism that reads the alternator’s behaviour through the input voltage to determine whether the engine is genuinely running. No separate ignition feed. No D+ signal to hunt down in a wiring loom. No external sensor.
This matters for two reasons. First, it prevents the charger from draining the starter battery when the vehicle or vessel is parked - the charger activates when the engine starts and shuts down when the engine stops. Second, it solves the smart alternator problem directly. Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles deliberately reduce alternator output voltage at cruise, often to 12.5V or lower, which is insufficient to charge a service battery properly. The Orion-Tr Smart works with this behaviour rather than against it, retrieving a proper charge current from smart alternators and converting it to the correct regulated voltage for the service bank.
The engine detection thresholds are configurable. A “Smart Alternator” option applies default values suited to variable-voltage alternators. Start voltage, delayed start voltage, delayed start delay, and shutdown voltage can all be adjusted to match the specific alternator behaviour of the installation. For installations where engine detection is not appropriate, the feature can be disabled entirely, and the charger will operate whenever input voltage is present.

Adaptive Three-Stage Charging - Battery-Friendly by Design

The charging algorithm is not a fixed voltage output with a charger label attached. It is a genuine adaptive three-stage charger. Bulk phase delivers maximum current until the battery reaches absorption voltage. Absorption phase holds that voltage while current tapers, with the duration automatically calculated based on how deeply the battery was discharged. Float phase then maintains the battery at a lower voltage without overcharging.
For lead-acid batteries, this adaptive behaviour extends battery life by avoiding the twin failure modes of undercharging (sulfation) and overcharging (gassing and water loss). For lithium batteries, a fixed two-hour absorption time is preset to ensure a full charge without excessive float charging, which lithium chemistries do not require in the same way.
The output voltage is adjustable within a defined range for each model - 10-15V for 12V output models, 20-30V for 24V output models, 40-60V for 48V output models. This adjustability means the same charger can be set up for a battery charging profile or a fixed voltage supply to sensitive equipment, depending on the application.

Remote On/Off - Low-Power Switching for High-Current Circuits

The Orion-Tr Smart includes a two-pin remote on/off connector. This allows the charger to be switched on or off using a low-power switch, a relay contact, or the engine run/stop signal - without any high-current switch in the input wiring.
A conventional high-power DC-DC converter requires a switch rated for the full input current. A 30A charger on a 12V system needs a switch capable of interrupting up to 30A of DC current. That switch is large, expensive, and difficult to mount in a confined space. The remote on/off circuit controls the charger’s operation without carrying the main input current, so the switching device can be small, light, and mounted wherever it is convenient.
This also allows the charger to be integrated with the ignition circuit or the engine start/stop signal without any high-current switching hardware. The charger turns on when the engine starts and off when it stops, with no additional components required.

Protection and Environmental Ratings

The Orion-Tr Smart includes over-temperature protection. In high ambient temperatures, the output current is automatically reduced to protect the charger and the connected system. The full rated output is available up to 40°C, with operation continuing up to 55°C at reduced power. All models are short-circuit proof.
The IP43 rating applies when the unit is mounted with the screw terminals facing downwards. In that orientation, the enclosure is protected against dust and water spray at up to 60° from vertical - sufficient for engine bays, equipment lockers, and other installation locations where incidental moisture is possible but immersion is not.
Input undervoltage shutdown and restart thresholds are defined for each model. The charger will stop drawing current if the input voltage drops below a safe level and resume when voltage recovers. This protects the starter battery from deep discharge if something goes wrong on the source side, and it handles the voltage sag that occurs when a starter motor engages or a winch pulls heavy current.

Parallel Operation - Scalable Charging Current

Unlimited Orion-Tr Smart units can be connected in parallel to increase output power. There is no practical ceiling on how far this can be taken. Two 12/12-30 units deliver 60A. Three deliver 90A. Four deliver 120A. For large lithium banks or fast recharge requirements, this is a straightforward path to higher capacity without switching to a different product family.
The paralleled units share the load automatically. No special configuration is required beyond matching the charging parameters across all units, which can be done through the VictronConnect app before installation.

Model Range and System Coverage

The isolated Orion-Tr Smart range covers 12V, 24V, and 48V systems with models delivering up to 400W of output power. The 360W class includes the 12/12-30, 12/24-15, 12/48-8, 24/12-30, 24/24-17, 24/48-8.5, 48/12-30, 48/24-16, and 48/48-8 variants. Nominal output voltages are 12.2V, 24.2V, and 48.2V respectively, with adjustable ranges of 10-15V, 20-30V, and 40-60V.
The 12/12-30 measures 130 × 186 × 80 mm and weighs 1.8 kg. The 24/12-30 is 130 × 186 × 70 mm and 1.6 kg. The 48/12-30 is the same footprint at 1.6 kg. Screw terminals accept cable up to 16 mm². No special tools are required for installation.

Where the Isolated Orion-Tr Smart Fits - Wysher × Victron Energy for Systems with Separate Ground References

The isolated Orion-Tr Smart is not the right answer for every DC-DC charging requirement. It is the right answer when the starter and service battery circuits must not share a common negative connection, when the installation location requires the charger to be independent of an unreliable ground path, and when remote monitoring and configuration are valuable.
Typical applications include:
Fibreglass boats and yachts where the starter battery and house bank do not share a common grounding bus, and where galvanic corrosion is a persistent concern. The 200V DC isolation barrier prevents stray currents from travelling between the two battery systems, protecting underwater hardware and keeping navigation electronics free of ground noise.
Trailers and tow vehicles where the ground path through the hitch or 7-pin connector is unreliable. The isolated charger makes the charging circuit independent of the trailer connector ground, so the service battery charges correctly regardless of the condition of that connection.
Ambulances, service trucks, and emergency vehicles where the vehicle chassis and the auxiliary equipment ground may be intentionally separated, or where sensitive communication and medical equipment requires a clean ground reference.
Off-grid and industrial systems where a 48V battery bank must supply 24V or 12V equipment on a separate ground system. The isolated 48/24 and 48/12 models provide regulated charging output without bonding the two systems together.
Lithium conversions in vehicles or vessels where the installer wants the safety margin of isolation without committing to a permanent grounding architecture. An isolated unit can always be configured as non-isolated later if the system design changes.
Based on the Victron Energy architecture, Wysher integrates Orion-Tr Smart isolated chargers with LiFePO₄ battery banks, MPPT solar charge controllers, and GX monitoring devices to deliver complete, intelligent charging systems for installations with separate ground references. Through careful system engineering, we ensure:
✓ Full galvanic isolation - 200V DC between input, output, and case - eliminating ground loops and galvanic corrosion risk
✓ Adaptive three-stage charging with configurable absorption and float voltages for lithium, AGM, gel, and flooded batteries
✓ Built-in Bluetooth for monitoring and configuration via VictronConnect, with no physical access required
✓ Engine shutdown detection with no ignition wire or D+ signal, compatible with Euro 5 and Euro 6 smart alternators
✓ Remote on/off switching that eliminates high-current switches from the input wiring
✓ Unlimited parallel operation for scalable charging current as battery banks grow
✓ IP43 protection when mounted with terminals downwards, suitable for engine bays and equipment lockers
