The Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated is an adaptive three-stage DC-DC charger built for a specific and increasingly common problem: charging a service battery from a vehicle or vessel alternator that does not deliver enough voltage to do the job properly.
The Smart Alternator Problem, Solved Without Complexity
Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles manage their alternators through the engine control unit. At cruise, once the starter battery is topped up, the alternator output voltage is deliberately reduced - sometimes to 12.5V or lower - to save fuel and reduce emissions. The alternator is functioning as designed, but that design was never intended to support a second battery bank. A deeply discharged service battery needs 14.2V to 14.6V to accept a meaningful charge. At 12.5V, it receives almost nothing.
The Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated addresses this directly. It accepts whatever the alternator is willing to provide - as low as 8V on a 12V input model - and converts it to a properly regulated charging voltage for the service battery. No ignition wire to splice. No D+ signal to hunt down in a wiring loom. The charger includes an engine shutdown detection mechanism that reads the alternator's behaviour through the input voltage itself. It activates when the engine starts, shuts down when the engine stops, and works with smart alternators rather than being defeated by them.
Non-Isolated, Not Limited
The non-isolated designation means the input and output share a common negative connection. On a steel-hulled vessel, a vehicle with a metal chassis, or any system where the start battery and service battery are already bonded to the same ground reference, this is exactly the situation that already exists. The non-isolated Orion-Tr Smart takes advantage of that shared ground to deliver a more compact, more efficient charger than its isolated counterpart.
The efficiency figures reflect that design choice. The 24/24-17 model reaches 89%, and the 12/12-30 achieves 87% at full load. More of the input energy reaches the battery rather than being dissipated as heat inside the charger. In a confined equipment locker or behind a vehicle panel, that thermal advantage matters.
Adaptive Three-Stage Charging, Configurable by Bluetooth
The charging algorithm is genuinely adaptive, not a fixed voltage output with a charger label attached. Bulk phase delivers maximum available current until the battery reaches absorption voltage. Absorption phase holds that voltage while current tapers, with the duration calculated based on discharge depth. Float phase then maintains the battery at a lower voltage without overcharging.
For lead-acid batteries, shallow discharges result in shorter absorption times to prevent overcharging, while deep discharges automatically extend absorption to ensure complete recharge. For lithium batteries, absorption time is fixed - two hours by default - to deliver a full charge without the extended float charging that lithium chemistries do not require.
Every parameter is accessible through the VictronConnect app via Bluetooth. Battery preset selection, absorption and float voltages, bulk time limit, and the engine detection thresholds can all be adjusted without any physical access to the charger. For an installer who has mounted the unit behind a panel or in a cramped locker, this is the difference between a five-minute settings change and a disassembly job.
Engine Detection Tuned to the Installation
The engine shutdown detection thresholds are configurable, with a Smart Alternator preset that applies default values suited to variable-voltage alternator behaviour. Start voltage, delayed start voltage, shutdown voltage, and the associated delays can all be adjusted to match the specific characteristics of the vehicle or vessel. In installations where engine detection is not appropriate - a shore-powered charging setup, for example - the feature can be disabled entirely, and the charger will operate whenever input voltage is present.
Constant Voltage Mode for Equipment Supply
The non-isolated Orion-Tr Smart is not limited to battery charging. It can be configured as a fixed-output voltage source for powering equipment directly. A 24/12-30 unit set to 13.2V can supply stable 12V power to navigation electronics, communication radios, or control systems without any charging function. The same hardware serves both roles depending on how the output voltage is configured.
IP43 Protection and Practical Installation
When mounted with the screw terminals facing downwards, the Orion-Tr Smart carries an IP43 rating, protecting against dust and water spray at up to 60° from vertical. Engine bays, equipment lockers, and marine electrical compartments are all within its operating envelope. No special tools are required for installation. The DC connection uses screw terminals accepting cable up to 16 mm². A non-replaceable input fuse is built in.
Parallel Operation Without Limit
All models are short-circuit proof and can be paralleled to increase output current. There is no practical ceiling on the number of units that can be connected in parallel. Two 24/12-30 units deliver 60A. Three deliver 90A. For larger service banks or faster recharge requirements, this is a straightforward path to higher capacity without switching to a different product family.
